Reviews.

  • “There’s a special terror in the thought that the blood you are injecting as a cure might contain an even worse illness.” ★★★★★

    Ed Cumming, The Independent

  • “A flawless piece of work which is both a sensitive and balanced portrait of Dando’s life and a fast-paced investigation of her death” ★★★★★

    Anthony France, The Evening Standard

  • “The programme was about treading fine lines, and the joins between the story’s many awful and complicated strands were seamless.” ★★★★

    Ben Dowell, The Times

  • “When dealing with the killer, director Marcus Plowright understood the crucial difference between context and defence.” ★★★★

    Gabriel Tate, The Daily Telegraph

  • “In all these testimonies, hatred is conspicuous by its absence.” ★★★★

    Sean O'Grady, The Independent

  • “It was impossible to watch without feeling a cold fury.” ★★★★

    Anita Singh, The Telegraph

  • “its success could be measured by how much anger it induced in the viewer. I’ve seen few documentaries that have made me angrier.” ★★★★

    James Jackson, The Times

  • “Even a republican like me can see he is a gift to the monarchy, a star striker of the Windsor team...” ★★★★

    Carol Midgley, The Times

  • “...a succession of often humbling and inspirational encounters...” ★★★★

    Sean O'Grady, The Independent

  • “Men account for three quarters of suicides in the UK, and the Duke’s campaign is a laudable effort to make a difference.”

    Anita Singh, The Daily Telegraph

  • “Plowright’s documentary brought back all those feelings with a level of restraint.” ★★★★

    James Jackson, The Times

  • “This sensitively produced documentary … the producer and director of the film have made a fitting and balanced tribute to Jill, something she deserves” ★★★★

    Sean O'Grady, The Independent

  • “The strength of the film was in director Marcus Plowright’s sensitive interviews with friends, colleagues and family, as well as with the oft-criticised and clearly still rankled detectives.” ★★★★

    Chris Harvey, Daily Telegraph

  • “The Murder of Jill Dando took us – quietly, carefully and unsensationally – through what remains an extraordinary, and unsolved, case. The programme wisely decided to keep out of the way and gave us an hour that was all the more moving for its spareness.”

    Lucy Mangan, The Guardian

  • ”A high-stakes, high-school documentary series of quiet distinction.” ★★★★

    Julia Raeside, The Guardian

  • “It could have been bleak, but this accomplished debut from first-time director Marcus Plowright, narrated by Ian McKellen, was everything a good documentary should be: powerful, often moving and expertly injecting the subject matter with a hefty dose of humour.” ★★★★★

    Anita Singh, The Telegraph

  • “Documentary of the week and one that deserves awards.”

    The Observer

  • “The 60-minute documentary, which was narrated by Sir Ian McKellen, drew an average audience of 1.1 million viewers and a 6.9% share of all TV viewing between 10pm and 11pm.”

    The Guardian

About.

Marcus has established himself as one of the UK's foremost auteur documentary directors. His directorial debut in 2015, Muslim Drag Queens for Channel 4 (UK), narrated by Sir Ian McKellen, spearheaded the network's True Colours alternative voices initiative in 2016 and earned Marcus a nomination for Breakthrough BAFTA talent.

Since then, World's Collide: The Manchester Bombing, examining the terror attack at an Ariana Grande concert in his home city of Manchester (UK), garnered a 2023 BAFTA nomination for Best Factual Series. In 2021, Marcus' first feature documentary for ITV (UK), In Cold Blood, investigating the largest treatment disaster in NHS history, won an International Emmy for Best Current Affairs film. It also received UK nominations for Best Current Affairs film at the Royal Television, Grierson, and Amnesty International Awards. The Telegraph described it as "a staggering investigation to make your blood boil".

Marcus gained earlier recognition in the United States with his 2017 BBC series American High School, depicting life inside a 99% African American high school in South Carolina. The series sold internationally and enjoyed a six-week run on National Geographic.

2019 saw Marcus win a Grierson award for his Channel 4 (UK) film, The Football Club. That same year, he received another BAFTA nomination (Best Single Documentary) for The Murder of Jill Dando, the BBC's highest-rated documentary of the year. In 2020, he filmed and directed Football, Prince William and Our Mental Health with the Duke of Cambridge.

Marcus directed the Netflix series Who Killed Jill Dando in 2023. In August 2024 he completed a two-part Peacock Special for NBC Universal, The Girl on The Milk Carton and is now serving as Director and Showrunner of the forthcoming mini series, Dirty Rotten Scandals: The Dr Phil Show for Versant Media.
